Simply put, a mentor offers friendship and a listening ear. A mentor is a volunteer who works to provide a young person with a special encouraging relationship that will hopefully become a foundation for success in life.
The youth involved are recommended by their teachers, counselors, parents, or other concerned adults. The youth and his or her parent must agree to participate in any mentoring program, and the youth must agree to follow a written set of expectations
Why mentoring? According to a recent national study, "Making A Difference: An Impact Study of Big Brothers/Big Sisters," Students with mentors are:
52% less likely to skip school.
27% less likely to drink alcohol.
33% less likely to hit someone.
46% less likely to take drugs.
Each mentoring opportunity available requires specific training, background check, personal interview, and a commitment of at least one hour per week.
